Preparing to replace the storage node in the chassis

You must remove the failed storage node correctly from the cluster in NetApp Element Plug-in for vCenter Server before you install the replacement node. You can do this without causing any service interruption. You must obtain the serial number of the failed storage node from the Element UI and match it with the serial number on the sticker at the back of the node.

About this task

In the case of component failures where the node is still online and functioning, for example, a dual inline memory module (DIMM) failure, you must remove the drives from the cluster in NetApp Element Plug-in for vCenter Server before you remove the failed node.

If your storage nodes are part of a SolidFire cluster, you can remove them from the cluster using the NetApp Element software UI or the Element API. See KB article: 1074249.

Steps

  1. Optional: If you have a DIMM failure, use the NetApp Element Plug-in for vCenter Server to remove the drives as follows before you remove the node. If you do not have to remove drives from the cluster, you can skip this step and proceed to the next step.
    1. Select NetApp Element Management > Cluster > Drives.
    2. Select the drives associated with the node you are going to replace, and click Remove.
  2. In the NetApp Element Plug-in for vCenter Server, copy the management virtual IP address (MVIP) from the UI.

In this figure, the MVIP IP address in the NetApp SolidFire vCenter Plug-in is highlighted.
  3. Open a web browser, and enter the MVIP address to access the Element UI.
  4. Log in to the Element web UI using the user name and password that you configured in the NetApp Deployment Engine.
  5. Click Cluster > Nodes.
  6. Note the serial number (service tag) of the failed node.
You will take the serial number you noted to your chassis and match it with the serial number on the sticker at the back of the node.
  7. After you note the serial number, remove the node from the cluster as follows:
    1. Click the Actions button for the node you want to remove.
    2. Click Remove.
