Preparing your AWS environment

Your AWS environment must meet a few requirements so that Cloud Manager and ONTAP Cloud operate correctly in AWS.

Before you begin

You should be familiar with AWS networking: Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), subnets, and security groups.

AWS Documentation: Your VPC and Subnets

  1. Set up your AWS networking.
At a minimum, your networking must meet the following requirements:
    • The target VPC must have one or more subnets that have outbound internet access.
    • To deploy ONTAP Cloud systems in subnets or networks separate from Cloud Manager, connections between those networks must be in place.
    • To replicate data across a hybrid cloud or multi-cloud environment, VPN connections between networks must be in place.
  2. Grant the required permissions so Cloud Manager can perform operations in AWS.
  3. Subscribe to ONTAP Cloud from the AWS Marketplace so you can launch instances:
    1. Go to the AWS Marketplace pages for ONTAP Cloud:
    2. Review the terms, and then click Accept.
Important: You must not launch ONTAP Cloud instances from the EC2 console.
Note: Subscribing is not required to launch ONTAP Cloud in the AWS GovCloud (US) region.
  4. Depending on your needs, request an increase to default AWS limits for instances and total storage.
  5. Decide whether you want to encrypt data and meet encryption requirements, if necessary.
Note: Skip this step if you plan to use Cloud Manager in the Volume View.
  6. Optional: Set up AWS billing and cost management so that Cloud Manager can display compute and storage costs for ONTAP Cloud instances.
Note: Skip this step if you plan to use Cloud Manager in the Volume View.
