Hybrid clouds with StorageGRID Webscale

You can build a hybrid cloud either by using policy-driven data management to store objects on AWS S3, or by leveraging StorageGRID Webscale platform services.

When you define the Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) rules for your grid, you can specify AWS S3 as a destination for objects using an Archive Node. Archival objects stored to AWS S3 are managed by StorageGRID Webscale, which means that their location is transparent to clients who continue to store, retrieve, or update these objects directly from the grid.

Platform services give you the ability to use remote services as endpoints for object replication, event notifications, or search integration. Platform services operate independently of the grid's ILM rules, and are enabled for individual S3 buckets. The following services are supported:

For example, you could choose to use CloudMirror replication to mirror specific customer records to a sister organization that has its own instance of StorageGRID Webscale, essentially creating a cross-organizational hybrid grid. You could send a notification to a third party monitoring application as each such object is received to track which records were transferred, while sending the objects' metadata to an Elasticsearch index for analysis.
