Preparing to remove the compute node

Before you replace the failed compute node, you must migrate the virtual machines (VMs) hosted on the node to an available host, and remove the failed node from the cluster. You must get details about the failed node, such as serial number and networking information.

About this task

You can use the VMware vSphere Web Client to migrate the VMs to another host and to remove the failed node from the cluster. Alarms in vCenter alert you of the node failure.

Procedure

  1. In the VMware vSphere Web Client, perform the steps to migrate the VMs to another available host.
Note: See the VMware documentation for the migration steps.
  2. After you migrate the VMs, perform the steps to remove the node from the inventory. The steps will depend on the version of NetApp HCI in your current installation. Select the failed node, and click Monitor > Hardware Status > Sensors.
    Option Description
For NetApp HCI 1.3 and later
    1. Select the failed node, and click Monitor > Hardware Status > Sensors.
    2. Note the serial number of the failed node.

You will identify the node by matching the serial number on the sticker at the back of the node with the serial number you noted.

    3. Right-click the failed node and select Connection > Disconnect.
    4. Click Yes to confirm the action.
    5. Right-click the failed node and select Remove from Inventory.
    6. Click Yes to confirm the action.
For versions of NetApp HCI earlier than 1.3
    1. Right-click the node and select Remove from Inventory.
    2. Select the failed node, and click Monitor > Hardware Status > Sensors.
    3. Note the Node 0 serial number, which is the serial number of the failed node. You would identify the node by matching the serial number on the sticker at the back of the node with the serial number you noted.

In this screenshot, the serial number of the failed node is highlighted.

    4. With the failed node selected, click Manage > Networking > VMkernel adapters, and copy the four IP addresses listed.

In this screenshot, the IP information for the compute node networks is shown in the VMware vSphere Web Client. You can reuse this information when you perform the initial network configuration steps in VMware ESXi.
