Configuring network and cluster settings for Witness Nodes

After you deploy the Witness Node VM, perform the steps to configure the management and storage network, and cluster settings for the Witness Node.

Before you begin

Procedure

  1. In the VMware vSphere Web Client, click Hosts and Clusters.
  2. Right-click the Witness Node, and power it on if it is not already powered on.
  3. In the Summary view of the Witness Node, click Launch Web Console.
  4. Wait for the Witness Node to boot up to the menu with the blue background.
  5. Click anywhere inside the console to access the menu.
  6. Configure the management network as follows:
    1. Press the down arrow key to navigate to Network, and then press Enter for OK.
    2. Navigate to Network config, and then press Enter for OK.
    3. Navigate to net0, and then press Enter for OK.
    4. Press Tab till you get to the IPv4 field, and then if applicable, delete the existing IP in the field and enter the management IP information for the Witness Node. Check the subnet mask and gateway as well.

shows the management network IPv4 field.
Note: No VLAN tagging will be applied at the VM host level; tagging will be handled in vSwitch.
    5. Press Tab to navigate to OK, and press Enter to save changes.
After management network configuration, the screen returns to Network.
  7. Configure the storage network as follows:
    1. Press the down arrow key to navigate to Network, and then press Enter for OK.
    2. Navigate to Network config, and then press Enter for OK.
    3. Navigate to net1, and then press Enter for OK.
    4. Press Tab till you get to the IPv4 field, and then if applicable, delete the existing IP in the field and enter the storage IP information for the Witness Node.
Note: No VLAN tagging will be applied at the VM host level; tagging will be handled in vSwitch.
    5. Press Tab to navigate to OK, and press Enter to save changes.
    6. Set MTU to 9000.

shows the storage network configuration screen.
Note: If MTU is not set before you add the Witness Node to the cluster, you will see cluster warnings for inconsistent MTU settings. This can prevent garbage collection from running and cause performance problems.
    7. Press Tab to navigate to OK, and press Enter to save changes.
After storage network configuration, the screen returns to Network.
  8. Configure cluster settings as follows:
    1. Press Tab to navigate to Cancel, and press Enter.
    2. Navigate to Cluster settings, and then press Enter for OK.
    3. Press Tab to navigate to Change Settings, and press Enter for Change Settings.
    4. Press Tab to navigate to Hostname field, and enter the host name.
