Restore or download VM-based application files and folders using NetApp Backup and Recovery

Restore or download files and folders that were backed up from a VM-based Kubernetes application. To restore or download files and folders, you need at least one restore point, and the VM needs to have a partition with a supported filesystem. You can currently restore and download from the local snapshot only.

Supported guest operating systems and versions include:

  • Windows: Windows Server 2022, Windows 10, Windows 11

  • Linux: Ubuntu 22.04, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, Fedora 39, CentOS Stream 9, openSUSE Leap 15.6

Supported filesystems include:

  • BTRFS

  • exFAT

  • ext4

  • NTFS

  • XFS

Required NetApp Console role

Restore VM files and folders from a VM-based application

Restore VM-based files and folders from a restore point when you need to recover specific files or folders to a VM-based application without restoring the entire application. Existing files are overwritten by default.

Before you begin

Before restoring files and folders from a VM-based application, verify that the destination VM meets the following requirements:

  • The destination VM is running and has an IP address.

  • The user can write to the restore destination.

  • SSH is enabled and uses password authentication (key-only login is not supported). Verify that the SSH service is enabled on Linux destination hosts and that an OpenSSH server is installed and enabled on Windows destination hosts.

Steps

  1. In the NetApp Backup and Recovery menu, select Restore.

  2. Choose a Kubernetes application from the list, and select View and Restore for that application.

    The list of restore points appears.

  3. Select the Actions Actions icon icon for a restore point, and open the Restore files and folders menu.

  4. Select the source location to restore from (only snapshot is supported at this time).

  5. Select a virtual machine from the recovery point to browse its files and folders.

  6. Select Next.

    The file browser appears.

  7. Browse the list of files and folders, and select files and folders to restore.

    Open a partition to browse its files and folders. When you select a file or folder to restore by enabling its checkbox, it is added to the "selected" list to the right.

  8. When finished, select Next.

  9. Select the Transfer to VM transfer mode.

  10. Choose destination settings:

    • Restore to original VM: Enable this option to restore to the original virtual machine.

      • Restore to the same path as in the backup: Enable this option to restore to the same path used in the backup.

      • Alternate path: To restore to a different path, enable this option and enter the preferred path.

    • Restore to alternate VM: Enable this option to restore to a different virtual machine in the cluster. Select a VM from the list, and enter a destination path for the restored files or folders.

  11. In the Guest virtual machine credentials section, select the credentials for the guest VM.

    If you haven't yet added credentials for this guest VM, select Add credential to add a new credential for the guest VM. After you add a guest VM credential, the new credential appears in the credentials list, and you can select it. These credentials are unique to guest VMs, and can be reused by any cluster that uses the same Console agent.

  12. Select Next.

  13. Review and confirm the file or folder restore settings.

  14. Select Restore.

Download Kubernetes VM files and folders

Download files and folders from a restore point when you don't want to restore the files and folders to a VM-based application, but instead want to save them to your local computer. The downloaded files and folders are saved as a single .tar archive. Downloading files and folders doesn't require credentials for a guest VM.

Steps

  1. In the NetApp Backup and Recovery menu, select Restore.

  2. Choose a Kubernetes application from the list, and select View and Restore for that application.

    The list of restore points appears.

  3. Select the Actions Actions icon icon for a restore point, and open the Restore files and folders menu.

  4. Select the source location to download from (only snapshot is supported at this time).

  5. Select a virtual machine from the recovery point to browse its files and folders.

  6. Select Next.

    The file browser appears.

  7. Browse the list of files and folders, and select files and folders to download.

    Open a partition to browse its files and folders. When you select a file or folder to download by enabling its checkbox, it is added to the "selected" list to the right.

  8. When finished, select Next.

  9. Select the Download file transfer mode.

  10. Select Next.

  11. Review and confirm the file or folder download settings.

  12. Select Restore.

    Your web browser handles the download; save the .tar archive to your local machine.
