Replace a power supply - EF50 and EF80

Contributors netapp-lisa

Replace a power supply unit (PSU) in your EF50 or EF80 storage system when it fails or becomes faulty, ensuring that your system continues to receive the required power for stable operation.

Before you begin
  • Confirm that there is an issue with the power supply by reviewing the details in the Recovery Guru.

  • Check that the Attention (amber) LED on the power supply is on, indicating that the power supply or its integrated fan has a fault.

  • Address any other storage system issues.

In the Recovery Guru select Recheck to see if there are any other issues.

  • Make sure you have the following:

    • A replacement power supply.

Note Do not mix PSUs of different voltage types. Always replace like for like.
    • An ESD wristband or you have taken other antistatic precautions.

    • A flat static-free work surface.

    • A management station with a browser that can access SANtricity System Manager for the impaired controller.

To open the System Manager interface, point the browser to the impaired controller's domain name or IP address.

About this task
  • When a power supply fails, you must replace it as soon as possible so the storage system has a redundant power source.

  • Replace a power supply by unplugging the power cord from the faulty PSU, replacing it, and reconnecting the power cord.

  • You can turn on the storage system location (blue) LEDs (on the front of the storage system and both controllers) to aid in physically locating the affected storage system. Using SANtricity System Manager, select Hardware > Controllers and components, select the Controller shelf tab, and from the context menu select Turn on locator light.

Steps
  1. If you are not already grounded, properly ground yourself.

  2. Disconnect the power cord from the PSU by opening the power cord retainer, and then unplug the power cord from the PSU.

Note The PSU does not have a power switch.
  3. Remove the PSU:

    Replace AC PSU
    Callout number 1

Rotate the PSU handle up, to its horizontal position, and then grasp it.

    Callout number 2

With your thumb, press the orange locking tab to release the PSU from the controller.

    Callout number 3

Pull the PSU out of the controller while using your other hand to support its weight.

Caution The PSU is short. Always use two hands to support it when removing it from the controller so that it does not suddenly swing free from the controller and injure you.
  4. Unpack the replacement power supply and set it on a level surface near the storage system.

Save all packing materials for use when returning the failed power supply.

  5. Install the replacement PSU:

    1. Using both hands, support and align the edges of the PSU with the opening in the controller.

    2. Gently push the PSU into the controller until the orange locking tab clicks into place.

A PSU will only properly engage with the internal connector and lock in place one way.

Note To avoid damaging the internal connector, do not use excessive force when sliding the PSU into the controller.
    3. Rotate the handle down, so it is out of the way of normal operations.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the PSU and secure the power cord with the power cord retainer.

Once power is restored to the PSU, the status LED should be green.

  7. Confirm that the PSU's status is Optimal and that the storage system's Attention LEDs are off.

If the status is not Optimal or if any of the Attention LEDs are on, confirm that the power cable is correctly seated and the PSU is installed correctly. If necessary, remove and reinstall the PSU.

Note If you cannot resolve the problem, contact NetApp Support before continuing with this procedure.
  8. From SANtricity System Manager, click Support > Upgrade Center to ensure that the latest version of SANtricity OS is installed.

As needed, install the latest version.

  9. Return the failed part to NetApp, as described in the RMA instructions shipped with the kit.

Contact technical support at NetApp Support, 888-463-8277 (North America), 00-800-44-638277 (Europe), or +800-800-80-800 (Asia/Pacific) if you need the RMA number or additional help with the replacement procedure.//2025-11-17 ontap-systems-internal/issues/1391
