Requirements and best practices to hot-add an NS224 shelf to your ASA system

Contributors netapp-jsnyder

Verify that your ASA system meets ONTAP version, shelf capacity, and cabling requirements before hot-adding an NS224 shelf. Review firmware and configuration best practices to ensure the hot-add procedure completes successfully without errors.

Requirements

Your HA pair must meet the following requirements to hot-add an NS224 shelf.

Supported ONTAP version

Your platform model and version of ONTAP must support the NS224 shelf and drives you are hot-adding. See NetApp Hardware Universe.

Number of shelves

Your HA pair must support at least one additional shelf beyond the number currently installed. After hot-adding shelves, you cannot exceed the maximum number of shelves supported by your HA pair. See NetApp Hardware Universe.

Cabling

You must have the correct number and type of cables to connect the shelf. If you are hot-adding a shelf to an HA pair that already has an NS224 shelf, your HA pair must be cabled as multipath HA with no storage cabling errors.

Run Active IQ Config Advisor to view any storage cabling error messages and corrective actions. See NetApp Hardware Universe for cable requirements.

Best practices

Familiarize yourself with the following best practices before hot-adding an NS224 shelf.

Disk Qualification Package

Install the current version of the Disk Qualification Package before hot-adding a shelf. Having the current DQP installed allows your system to recognize and use newly qualified drives, prevents system event messages about noncurrent drive information, and avoids drive partitioning failures caused by unrecognized drives. The DQP also notifies you of noncurrent drive firmware.

Active IQ Config Advisor

Run Active IQ Config Advisor before and after hot-adding a shelf. Running it before hot-adding provides a snapshot of existing shelf Ethernet connectivity, verifies NSM firmware versions, and identifies any shelf IDs already in use. Running it after hot-adding verifies that shelves are cabled correctly and that shelf IDs are unique within the HA pair.

NSM and drive firmware

Install current versions of NVMe shelf module (NSM) firmware and drive firmware on your storage system before adding a new shelf. Do not revert firmware to a version that does not support your shelf and its components.

What's next

After reviewing the requirements, prepare to hot-add your shelf.
