Determine Capacity Tiers license size for ONTAP Select

The Capacity Tiers license is based on the underlying disk capacity managed by each ONTAP Select node and not the usable capacity of the node, HA-pair, or cluster. Each Capacity Tiers license is assigned to an individual node serial number for a specified capacity and requires an accompanying support contract.

The licensed capacity for a Capacity Tiers license is in full TB amounts, with a minimum of 1 TB. You calculate the licensed capacity by multiplying the amount of usable space by the overhead factor. The overhead factor estimates the ONTAP Select software overhead capacity to be taken from the usable space and it applies to determining the ONTAP Select capacity for NVMe, SSD, HDD, or virtual drives. The overhead factor differs between a single-node and multi-node (HA-pair based) clusters:

  • Overhead factor for single-node clusters is 1.13

  • Overhead factor for multi-node clusters is 2.67

You need to calculate the licensed capacity based on the usable space to ensure you have enough for your deployment. For example, you want 10 TB of usable capacity for an HA pair (5 TB per node):

  • With an HA pair, the data is duplicated between both nodes for redundancy, so for 10 TB of usable data in an HA pair, you need to have 10 TB per node, in case one of the nodes goes offline.

  • The factor of 2.67 doubles the capacity of each node and adds the overhead capacity (0.67) needed for ONTAP Select to function.

  • The license capacity per node is 14 TB (5 x 2.67 = 13.35). For the HA pair, you require two 14 TB licenses to have 10 TB of usable capacity.
