Refresh NVMe data LIFs

Contributors joan-ing

Enable NVMe data LIF refresh to let published NVMe volumes use LIFs that are added, removed, or assigned a new address without recreating the backend or restarting Trident.

Overview

When you add an ONTAP SAN backend, Trident discovers the NVMe data LIFs for the SVM. By default, Trident retains that set of LIFs until you add the backend again or restart Trident.

Set enableDataLIFRefresh to true to refresh NVMe data LIFs while Trident is running. Published NVMe volumes then use LIFs that are added, removed, or assigned a new address.

This option is an installation parameter, not a backend configuration parameter. It is disabled by default.

NVMe data LIF refresh is available starting with Trident 26.10.

This feature applies to:

  • ontap-san with sanType: nvme on unified ONTAP.

  • ontap-san using NVMe/TCP on ASA r2.

Caution

Removing or replacing all data LIFs at the same time is disruptive. If you plan to remove or replace all data LIFs, make sure a replacement LIF is in place first so that data access is not interrupted.

Enable NVMe data LIF refresh

Trident operator

For a new installation, set enableDataLIFRefresh in the TridentOrchestrator spec:

apiVersion: trident.netapp.io/v1
kind: TridentOrchestrator
metadata:
  name: trident
spec:
  namespace: trident
  enableDataLIFRefresh: true

Apply the manifest:

kubectl apply -f tridentorchestrator_cr.yaml

For an existing installation, patch the TridentOrchestrator:

kubectl patch torc trident --type=merge -p '{"spec":{"enableDataLIFRefresh":true}}'

Verify the applied value:

kubectl get torc trident -o jsonpath='{.status.currentInstallationParams.enableDataLIFRefresh}'

Helm

For a new installation, set the Helm value:

helm install trident netapp-trident/trident-operator \
  --namespace trident --create-namespace \
  --set enableDataLIFRefresh=true

For an existing Helm installation, upgrade the release with the value enabled:

helm upgrade trident netapp-trident/trident-operator \
  --namespace trident \
  --reuse-values \
  --set enableDataLIFRefresh=true

You can also set enableDataLIFRefresh: true in a Helm values file and pass it to helm upgrade with -f <values-file>.

tridentctl

For a new installation, use the --enable-datalif-refresh flag:

tridentctl install --enable-datalif-refresh -n trident

To enable the option on an existing tridentctl installation, uninstall Trident and install it again with the flag. Follow the precautions in Uninstall Trident before uninstalling.

tridentctl uninstall -n trident
tridentctl install --enable-datalif-refresh -n trident
Note The --enable-datalif-refresh flag is an installation option and is not shown in tridentctl install --help.
