Use ONTAP Mediator for SnapMirror active sync and MetroCluster IP
ONTAP Mediator runs on a Linux host in a third failure domain, separate from your ONTAP clusters, where it provides a persistent, fenced store for high-availability (HA) metadata. ONTAP uses this store, along with the Mediator's node health query and ping-proxy functions, to monitor SnapMirror active sync relationships and MetroCluster IP configurations.

This documentation refers to the on-premises version of ONTAP Mediator. For information about ONTAP Cloud Mediator, available beginning with ONTAP 9.17.1, see the SnapMirror active sync documentation. |
Monitor SnapMirror active sync relationships
SnapMirror active sync uses ONTAP Mediator as a passive witness to the primary and mirror copies in a consistency group. If a network partition occurs or one copy becomes unavailable, SnapMirror active sync queries ONTAP Mediator to determine which copy continues to serve I/O, and discontinues I/O on the other copy.
Beginning with ONTAP 9.8, you can use any version of ONTAP Mediator to monitor a SnapMirror active sync relationship.

For limits on the number of SnapMirror active sync cluster pairs that a single ONTAP Mediator instance can monitor, see Object limits for ONTAP SnapMirror active sync. |
Monitor MetroCluster IP configurations
In a MetroCluster IP configuration, ONTAP Mediator stores state information about the MetroCluster nodes in mailbox LUNs and assists the nodes with a Mediator-assisted automatic unplanned switchover (MAUSO) in the event of a disaster or specific failure scenarios.
Beginning with ONTAP 9.19.1 and ONTAP Mediator 1.12, you can configure an ONTAP Mediator that uses HTTPS for communication to monitor your MetroCluster IP configuration. When you configure ONTAP Mediator with the iSCSI protocol, you can use any version of ONTAP Mediator to monitor a MetroCluster IP configuration.
