Manage protection groups in ONTAP tools

Use this task to view, edit, and delete protection groups and their relationships from the Protection groups page in ONTAP tools.

Before you begin

  • Ensure you have administrative privileges in vSphere.

  • Ensure your ONTAP tools user account has permissions to manage protection groups.

Important Before you edit or remove protection, review the warning messages in the dialog. Removing relationships can impact backup and consistency behavior.
About this task

  • ONTAP tools updates local protection records in the selected ONTAP tools instance.

  • If you select Delete associated storage elements, ONTAP tools removes storage elements in the protection group.

  • If you do not select Delete associated storage elements, manually remove destination-side relationships and storage elements in ONTAP.

View protection groups

Steps

  1. In the ONTAP tools plug-in, navigate to Protection > Protection groups.

    The protection groups list shows associated relationships, including consistency groups, SnapMirror policies, and protected datastores.

  2. Review the protection group details, including the number of protected datastores.

Edit protection group relationships

Steps

  1. In the ONTAP tools plug-in, navigate to Protection > Protection groups.

  2. Select the vertical ellipsis (three dots) next to the protection group you want to edit.

  3. Select Edit protection group.

  4. Update the relationship settings:

    1. If a protection group has an Automated Failover Duplex (AFD) relationship, you can add an asynchronous relationship.

    2. If a protection group has an asynchronous relationship, you can add an Automated Failover Duplex (AFD) relationship.

    3. If a protection group has both Automated Failover Duplex (AFD) and asynchronous relationships, you can remove either relationship from the Edit protection group window.

    4. Each protection group can have only one Automated Failover Duplex (AFD) relationship and one asynchronous relationship.

    5. To use a different AFD relationship, remove the existing AFD relationship and then add the new AFD relationship.

    6. If you remove an existing relationship in the Edit protection group window, review the warning that removing the relationship can impact backups and consistency.

    7. If you remove an asynchronous relationship in the Edit protection group window, destination-side storage resources are not deleted automatically. Manually remove destination-side relationships and storage elements in ONTAP.

Note Edit operations are limited to supported relationship settings. Refer to your protection policy and workflow requirements before saving changes.

Remove a protection group

Steps

  1. In the ONTAP tools plug-in, navigate to Protection > Protection groups.

  2. Select the vertical ellipsis (three dots) next to the protection group you want to remove.

  3. Select Remove protection.

  4. In the Remove protection dialog, review the message that removing host cluster protection results in unprotected datastores.

  5. Optional: Select Delete associated storage elements (cleanup artifacts) to remove storage elements in the protection group.

    Storage elements can include consistency groups, volumes, storage units, and snapshots.

  6. If you do not select Delete associated storage elements, ONTAP tools removes only local protection records. Manually remove destination-side relationships and storage elements in ONTAP.

Automated Failover Duplex (AFD)

Deleting protection on either site deletes the relationship on both sites.

Relationship records are removed as part of the workflow.

If you do not select Delete associated storage elements, manually remove remaining storage elements as needed.

Asynchronous

Delete applies to the local ONTAP tools instance only; cross-site delete is not available.

Local protection records are removed.

Manually remove destination-side relationships and storage elements in ONTAP.
Result

  • ONTAP tools removes local protection records for the selected protection group.

  • If you selected Delete associated storage elements, ONTAP tools removes the selected storage elements in the protection group.

  • If destination-side relationships or storage elements remain, remove them manually in ONTAP.
