SAP HANA with SUSE KVM and NetApp Storage

Contributors netapp-mschoen

This guide provides information about how to configure SUSE KVM for SAP HANA using NetApp storage.

Marco Schoen, NetApp

Introduction

This document describes additional steps required for SAP HANA Single-Host deployed on SUSE KVM using NetApp storage. It is based on the SUSE Best Practices for SAP HANA on KVM.

It mainly shows how to configure network interfaces for SR-IOV (Single Root I/O Virtualization) on the KVM host, to assign these virtual interfaces (VF) to a VM, and to configure the interfaces within the VM to access storage for SAP HANA using NFS.
In addition it describes how to setup FCP for SAP HANA usage within the VM.

Note SR-IOV must be used for SAP HANA network communication and for storage access using NFS.
The physical FCP HBA ports must be assigned to the VM as PCI devices for using FCP LUNs.
SAP HANA Multiple-Host systems aren't supported.

Prerequisites

This guide is valid for Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications 15 SP5/SP6 as KVM host.
Certified SAP HANA servers and NetApp storage must be used. Check the SAP HANA Hardware Directory for available options https://www.sap.com/dmc/exp/2014-09-02-hana-hardware/enEN

The setup and configuration of the KVM hosts and the VM must be done according the SUSE Best Practices for SAP HANA on KVM.
